Policy, Planning  and Fare Collection Internships

Four Nines Technologies, a certified California small business, was founded by consultants with broad experience in providing IT consulting services across a range of vertical industries. We formed the company around a shared commitment to provide excellent service to public sector organizations. We are based in the San Francisco Bay Area and provide services to clients across the county.

We are looking for a self-motivated graduate student intern that is curious and interested in gaining exposure to variety of fields in transportation. Focus areas may include fare policy and fare collection systems, asset management, business process reviews, performance assessments, and transportation planning and consulting with focus on transit agencies. Initial project could be either:

  • A fare policy study to help a transit agency develop a universal fare policy and fare collection technology strategy. There may be more opportunities to get engaged on other projects.

  • Supporting the procurement, design, implementation and testing of a second generation regional fare payment smart card.

Technical Project Manager

Overall, the position of Technical Project Manager is expected to be a strong communicator with the ability to manage multiple projects at one time.  The position requires the ability to leverage tools and project management practices to to manage time, budget, scope and tasks.  This position is part time with a flexible schedule and location depending on the candidate. This can grow to a full time position if desired.

The required skills are highlighted below based upon category:


  • A strong communicator (written and oral) to effectively communicate project scope, tasks and schedule

  • Ability to manage meetings and workshops in person and over the phone

  • Ability to communicate technical needs with non technical customers

Project Management

  • Managing and tracking of projects in a structured organized fashion (leveraging tools like AtTask, Omniplan and Google)

  • Working with project leads, managers and other stakeholders to define milestones, establish schedules and allocate tasks

  • Preparing presentations, project documentation and reports

  • Establishing and following project development procedures in accordance with applicable industry best practices and to maximize efficiency

  • Delivering the project to the quality, time and scope requirements specified

Technical Management

  • Strong understanding of SaaS tools like Google, AtTask, Jira and others

  • Strong understanding of software development lifecycle

  • Ability to manage multiple team members with knowledge transfer, skill building and mentoring

Technical Expertise

  • Experience developing functional integration specifications

  • Experience working with Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) and Agile practices
